The November Chess Open, the club's third tournament, was a success. Six players participated in the November Chess Open and, despite the small numbers, the quality of games was excellent. In the first round, Chris Bond had Dave Hater on the ropes and had mate in two when his flag fell. Dave, who was sweating bullets, was quick to claim the win on time, and an audible groan was heard as Bond realized Hater had slipped from his grasp. This scene was repeated between Laura Berg and Carlos Matos in round 4, with Berg escaping the hammer Matos was weilding. Both of these games and many of the others are available for viewing under "Recent Jousts" on the club's web page. Because of the light attendance, a Round Robin was played instead of the Swiss System which ,was advertised. The participants initially waited to see if others would show up, and finally agreed to Game in 30 for five rounds. Time was literally of the essence both in starting and in play. On the up side, because of the light attendance, all participants walked away with a trophy for his or her efforts, and all agreed it was fun. Dave Hater, perhaps spurred on by his near loss to Bond, took first place with a score of 4½. Chris Bond, who was in his element, took second with a score of 4 and Zachary Kinney claimed third with a score of 3½. John O'Conner scored 2; Laura Berg scored 1 and Carlos was unable to net a score in this tournamnet, a fact which probably haunts him because of his near win agains Berg. Archive...
