Zugzwang Example
In chess the game flows by the taking of turns. Each person is compelled to move, or quit the game by resigning of offering a draw.
It is possible to use this to your advantage and force your opponenet to make a bad move. If you take the game to a position where his only moves are bad moves, you can do this.
If this leads to mate, it is called ZugZwang. To understand more, examine the example below. But beware! Your opponenet can do the same to you if you don't take care.

Winning by zugzwang is always interesting. Zugzwang is the compulsion to move, but having to move can be embarrassing.
1. Kb7+ Kh7 2. Qh2+ Kg8 3. Qa2+ Kh7 If 3..... K-f8 4.Q-a8+ wins the Queen.
4. Qf7 Zugzwang! Black must move. If he could only pass he would be safe.
